There are so many styles and types of Compost Bins available that it helps to find Reviews all in the one place. Eventually, I intend to go through specific models and makes of Compost Bins, but to start with I will cover types in general.  If you just want to check out one Compost Bin that I can recommend straight up, it would be the ComposTumbler 08001 (you can click on that link, or the picture on the left to go to Amazon).  It has many advantages including wheels which most Composting Tumblers or Bins don’t have!

A well made Compost Tumbler will provide years of service, and gives you a clean and tidy way of making compost in your garden.  Some people even keep them near the back door so they can easily place in kitchen scraps.

There are numerous choices available when it comes to choosing a composting system, so the whole process can be quite confusing. Our aim here is to simplify that process, by providing a range of Compost Bin choices and hopefully organizing them in such a way that it will make it easier to decide on which Compost Bin you want to buy.

Of course all Composting Systems will have their advantages and disadvantages, so it is a matter of weighing up the pro’s and con’s of the type of composter that you feel will meet your composting needs.

Call me a fanatic, and perhaps a little odd, but I would really prefer to have a 3 Bay Wooden Composting System, a Compost Tumbler and a Worm Farm, because that way I get not only all the best fertilizer and Compost, but I have the most fun of using all the systems at the one time!

Composting is again on the increase as people are becoming more conscious of their own health and that of the environment. For some people making their own Compost will be a part of growing their own healthy organic vegetables.  For others they may just use it to improve the soil and the health of all their garden plants.

Some people just want to be able to deal with their kitchen scraps in an ecologically sensitive way, and use a small compost bin that can be kept inside. These systems obviously don’t produce a large amount of compost; however, it is certainly a convenient way of dealing with food scraps.  They may even use this in conjunction with an outdoor Compost Bin. Other people want a full on serious Composting System.

There are many different types of Compost Bins which include, open, closed, tumbling, worms, or even bio-chemical or enzyme types.  They come in small and large, for outside and for inside, and they come in single or multiple bin options.

Types of Popular Compost Bin Systems

Multiple Compost Bin System

This involves, what is probably obvious, the utilization of more than one Compost bin. These Composting Systems can come in two or three bins or compartments that are adjacent to each other. While the most common would be a structure that has three bays with slats that can be gradually added to the front of the bay as it is filling up with Compost Materials.  This same system can be done using other types of compost containers, even the tumbler varieties.

As you can see on the left, the 3 Bay Wooden Compost System looks great, and you can go and check out Wooden Compost Bins by clicking that link.  The main object with the two or three Bin Compost System is to allow you to be using the ‘cured’ compost from the one bin, while you are either adding to another bin, or while another full bin is still maturing.

Whether you want to have two or three bins will depend on how much compost you need as well as how quickly you go through it.  My preference is for Three Compost Bins as this means one is being used, one is ‘cooking’ and the third is in the process of being built.

Instead of having a 3 bay compost bin, you can have 2 or 3 separate Heavy Plastic Compost Bins or even more than one of the Tumbler Compost Bins.

With the multiple bay style Compost Bins, it makes turning your compost a little easier if you are doing it by hand and pitch fork, because you can move contents from one bin to the next.

The Single Compost Bin System

These come in many shapes and sizes and are made from a variety of materials.

Heavy duty plastic is a common material for Compost Bins and we intend to provide Reviews for a number of these styles of bin. Obviously, there are your Vinyl or heavy duty plastic Bins and Tumblers, and then you get your Slatted Wooden Compost Bins.  You can also buy or even make your own metal or wire type compost bins as well.

Compost Tumblers or Rotators

These are usually made of heavy plastic and on a stand that can be easily turned or rotated so that the content of the compost bin is able to age faster and break down becoming ready to use more quickly than some of the fixed Compost Bins.

If you are using a Single Compost Bin System, when your Compost Tumbler or bin contents are broken down and turned into friable sweet smelling compost you can then empty it into a pile that you can use as needed.  While your compost is aging you start collecting the ingredients for your next batch of compost in another pile near your Compost Bin.

So in this way, you are still using the 3 Bin method but only using the one Compost Bin to actually make the compost.

Worm Composting or Vermicomposting

This Worm Compost method provides another way of producing composting  and fertilizing materials for your garden.  It involves using Worms in a layered Bin, that allows the worms to work their way through the kitchen scraps and other compostable materials that you lay into the top section that is just above the worms.

The worms will produce castings as well as liquid fertilizer, both of which are a concentrated nutrient source for feeding your plants.

Your Worm Farm is a convenient way to recyle waste products and produce useful fertilizers for your garden, however, you do have to be aware that worms need a fairly even temperature to live in, in order to survive.

You will not want to be putting a black plastic bin in a place where the sun will make it too hot, as an example, or your Worm Composting experience will be very brief!  The Worm Factory is a very useful way to produce these fertilizers for your plants, because you can actually keep it on an inside verandah.

Your worms will require some regular care but in the scheme of things it is minimal, considering the wonderful things they will produce for your garden and plants.
